Welcome!

To the Fidelio Photography website. We are professional photographers based in Portland, ME. You may notice a few changes around here…our website is now our blog and our blog is now our website–basically we combined them! We absolutely loved our old website, but it was time for a change and we felt like we wanted our clients to get to know US and who we are, and we wanted to show the work that we love to make. You can still find our weddings website at fidelioweddings.com or by clicking the "weddings" link above. Thanks for visiting and please feel free to leave comments on our entries--we'd love to hear from you! -jess & lyle ps: we are currently updating our Portfolio and it will be launching soon!

Heather’s senior photo session

Please stay tuned because this is the first of at least 3-4 blogs this week as I catch up :)

Heather was looking for photographers in Maine and happened to find us on the web and we were glad she did! She was visiting from MN and looking at colleges here on the east coast–where she feels she belongs (um cause it’s amazing here…except in the winter ha)… So she and her family spent a few hours with us at the locations that she chose, Ft. Williams Park and the beach and we had a great time with her. Heather has a passion for art, especially photography, and we wanted to incorporate that into the shoot. She was so much fun to be around and up for anything, even getting in the water in her white pants at sunset for some water shots and dealing with the wind and cold water! Thanks, Heather, we had a great time with you!!

If you’re interested in booking a senior photo session this summer/fall, please get in touch! We are booking quickly!

Maine weddings…

We are in week 2 of a 4 week wedding marathon… so we have lots and lots of great stuff coming… but I couldn’t resist this fun shot from today’s wedding.

Steve and Naomi’s Engagement Session

Steve and Naomi hadn’t met us when we were booked for their wedding because the details were taken care of by Naomi’s mom who we met with before Christmas. So we weren’t sure what to expect when we met them, then again, they probably didn’t know what to expect of us either… But they are super cool and fun and we are going to have a blast shooting their wedding at Pineland Farms this October! So we met up last Friday for some engagement photo fun and here are some of the shots. :)

This weekend we are shooting a wedding which I’m sure will be amazing–it’s at a Synagogue here in Portland (Maine, not Oregon! We keep getting hits from people in Oregon, haha!) that has not been used for a wedding in three decades! Saturday is their rehearsal, then a dinner at DiMillo’s and Sunday is the wedding. Can’t wait! :)

ps: yes our updated portfolio area is still coming soon… we have been so busy. But it is coming, I promise. We have so much new stuff to update it with!

The story of us…

As you can imagine we talk weddings with a lot of people… most of our client-base right now are couples who have or will tie the knot. We like to take the time to meet with people to hear about their wedding plans and usually end up spending a few hours engaged in conversations about love. A lot of couples have had a question for us: what was your wedding like and who shot it? I thought I would give a little background on Lyle and I for our loyal readers. ;)

We met in 1999 when I was working as an admin assistant for a large diamond company in New York City–I had just moved there from the Midwest, right out of college and was told by everyone I didn’t have enough experience to get a photo and/or journalism related job. I started my job (which I hated, unfortunately it’s not as glamorous as it may seem ;) ) and a few months later someone who worked there pointed out a cute computer tech that came by our offices every few days to do work. I was standing in the office and he was behind a plate of bulletproof glass, and she said we would look cute together. My co-workers did a little dirty work and found out he was single and got me his email address. The rest is history. I knew from our first date (at TGI Friday’s ha!) that we would get married. And almost a year to the day of our first date we did. August 11, 2000.

We were married on the top of the World Trade Center at sunset. We eloped. Some of our family members found out and threatened to disown us if they weren’t invited (ok not really) and were there with us. We took a limo over to the World Trade Center and were escorted in a private elevator by the nicest people. I actually wore a long pink dress and carried pink roses. My hair was up with little flowers in it. I glowed (Actually I literally did because I was still extremely sunburnt from a recent trip we had taken to New Hampshire). It was amazing. We said our vows overlooking New York City and the clouds broke and it stopped raining. There was a group of tourists that gathered around. It was perfect.

There was one thing missing from our wedding, though. A photographer. We had put it all together so quickly and figured our family would be there to take snapshots. What we ended up with were a few photos, most blurry on film and a few tiny digital photos (so small that they could not be blown up or anything). I keep thinking now about how I have no photos to print to put in our house except the few we have… nothing to print on a canvas or make an album with. I will never look that way or feel that beautiful again. We will never have another wedding. And unfortunately there will not be a World Trade Center like that to go back to and eat dinner and celebrate our anniversary. If there was ONE thing I could tell potential brides it would be this: hire a photographer (actually two hehe!). You will never regret it. Yes it can be expensive, but good photos and well-trained photographers are worth paying for. Hire someone who knows what they are doing, because just because your Uncle Bob just bought a Nikon D40 that he saw Ashton Kutcher shooting a wedding with in a commercial, it’s not as easy as it looks. There is so much going on and the lighting conditions constantly change. Just putting a camera on auto mode and expecting it to do the work for you is only going to result in a huge amount of disappointment when you see the photos.

Your memories will begin to fade over time. Photos are priceless. Sometimes they are even a work of art. I cannot tell you how much I would give for even 10 amazing photos from my wedding day.

Kurt and Dawn Ellen’s engagement session, part 1

I know you’ve all been anxiously sitting on the edges of your seats waiting to hear if Kurt and Dawn Ellen actually took the plunge into the water during their engagement session (see preview blog entry)… they didn’t do it BUT I am convinced that if we had asked them to, they probably would have for the shot! ;) Kurt and Dawn Ellen are getting married in early July at Gilsland Farms, which is an amazing place filled with birds, trees, wildlife, trails and big open spaces for hiking or just hanging out… They are big into the outdoors and we definitely wanted to incorporate that into their shoot somehow… they were up for ANYTHING which we love! :) They are so much fun to be around and just radiate love for each other. It was awesome hanging out with them for a few hours and hitting a few great locations (including one of their favorite hangouts) for their engagement pics. We are so looking forward to the wedding!

We have another engagement shoot tonight, a portrait shoot tomorrow and a boudoir session with one of our brides Sunday–busy weekend. Look for more blogs next week though. :)

Looks for more from Kurt and Dawn Ellen’s shoot soon!

Taking the plunge…

did they or didn’t they… ?

I will have the answer and a blog of their amazing engagement session coming soon! But we felt like this was a great example of why hiring two photographers that work together is beneficial to our clients–two different perspectives. :)

More soon!

Amory and Jen’s Wedding: 5/25/08, Bar Harbor, ME

This is the first of many blogs you’ll see this week because I am determined to catch up! :)

We went up to Bar Harbor over Memorial Day weekend for Amory and Jen’s Wedding which was at the Atlantic Oaks Hotel. Saturday night was the rehearsal dinner at the hotel and it was great to meet their family and friends in advance–totally amazing group of people and we immediately felt welcomed by their hospitality. Our hotel had a great view of the ocean and we got to chill there the night before the wedding. It is always nice not to have to wake up and drive to a wedding. :) I was worried that I wouldn’t get enough sleep since SOMEONE, not mentioning any names or anything, kept the tv on late watching Titanic. It’s nice to see that my husband (oops mentioned him) still has a romantic side, and we’ve been married almost 8 years and I did not know that he liked that movie (but he said that he only likes it because there is a disaster involved haha!!)…

ANYway, the next morning we were off to the wedding around noon… I started by shadowing Jen as she got her hair done and got dressed while Lyle was with the groom and other family members/friends. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it but the getting ready shots are one of my favorite parts of the whole day. I love spending time with the bride and watching her get ready and catching all the before-wedding action. Their wedding was on the lawn of Atlantic Oaks with the ocean as a backdrop and Jen and her father walked down the balcony which Lyle was capturing as I got the reaction shots of the groom as he looked at his beautiful bride. The ceremony included a few elements from their Korean and Irish heritage (so cool!) and then they had vows they had written for each other. After the wedding they had a super fun reception with lots of dancing, some toasts and the cake cutting. Good times. :)

Rather than posting a ton of photos here, we would rather you watch the slideshow that we made for them, because it tells the story with about 4 minutes of photos and the music that Jen and Amory used for their recessional!

Thank you so much Amory and Jen for having us be there for your wedding day, and to your family for being so wonderful and encouraging to us! You guys are amazing and we had such a great weekend! :)

Kelly & Matthew and some updates…

I did photos of Kelly and Matthew last year and have done some headshots and other work of Kelly (stunning!)… we talked about how they never got a lot of photos on their wedding day (which was in DC) because it rained… so Kelly got her dress out and we found a few ways to use it creatively. ;) I LOVE it when brides choose to use their dress in a creative or fun way after the wedding and I have some amazing ideas for future shoots (so all you brides out there get in touch ;) ).

Anyone who has looked at my early work with models (from over 2 years ago) knows I love furniture in random places… this little couch has been sitting in my office just dying for a photo shoot for a year now. I really wanted to take it to the beach, but at the same time I didn’t want to completely trash it, so we used it in a different way. :)

We also did some hot couples photos–something else that I have done a few times with a few couples we’ve worked with and love it… I love the intensity of the moments and capturing the chemistry between two people. These are the kinds of photos I think couples will love to look back on someday!

And here are a few shots of Kelly that I did in my home studio (all natural light!):

We have been INSANELY busy and it’s only going to get crazier in the next few weeks as we have shoots (engagement, boudoir, fashion) every day this week and weddings almost every weekend. When we haven’t been shooting we’ve been spending huge amounts of time editing and fulfilling print orders. The fun never ends! ;) Last weekend I shot photos at the Old Port Festival of one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Matt Nathanson, and some are now up on the website of the radio station that sponsored the event–they are an awesome station and the show was so great!

We have a preview of Jen and Amory’s wedding coming soon as well as shots from the many engagement sessions we’ve done. We have started booking for 2009 and dates in June-August are going incredibly fast. Please contact us for pricing if you are interested–for the work that we do and the fact that we are TWO professional photographers that cover your day, we are very reasonably priced. :)

We are currently planning on spending a good part of January 2009 in southern California and are now booking weddings, fashion shoots, engagement shoots, whatever (anything!!) for that time. Please contact us if you need our rates and to set a date with us. We will be posting details of the trip and our plans in the coming months.

Next week the blog gets a new look and the new portfolio area launches! Stay tuned!

Dani and Ryan’s Engagement Session

We met Dani and Ryan in Old Orchard Beach, ME for their engagement shoot last week and had about 5 minutes of sun before it started raining and the clouds came out. It was ridiculously windy, but we all managed to survive and had fun walking around the empty streets (before all the tourists come to town!!), finding cool locations and shooting pics… and here are just a few….

Thanks Dani and Ryan! We had a great time shooting with you two! You rock! :)

We have a LOT of posting to catch up on and have some great stuff coming (including previews from Jen and Amory’s wonderful wedding last weekend), so please check back soon!

And so it begins again…

…Wedding season that is! We are off this weekend to Bar Harbor for Jen and Amory’s wedding and the weather is supposed to be AMAZING. We always love that. ;) Stay tuned for photos from their wedding as well as recent sessions–we have been doing a little bit of EVERYTHING lately (engagement, maternity, fashion, headshots, etc)… I am sorry I’m so behind in posting but we’ll have some great stuff coming soon, as well as a change in the design here and FINALLY updated portfolios! :)

Have a great Memorial Day weekend everyone! :)

Amory and Jen’s Engagement Photos, Portland, Maine

These are the kinds of emails that we LOVE to see in our inbox: “Oh…my…gosh!!!!! These are so amazing!!!!! We are freaking out!!!! Woo Hooo, you guys rock!!!!”

:)

Over the weekend we shot Amory and Jen’s engagement photos and had so much fun with them! How is it that we get so lucky to work with the coolest couples? Amory and Jen’s wedding is in just a few weeks in Bar Harbor–our first of the season–and we are so looking forward to it! We shot a wedding there last year and fell in love! Anyway, on to some of the photos!! :)

Heather

I did some beauty shots with Heather yesterday and thought I’d post a few here…. Makeup by Rebecca Morrell.

Dave and Lindsay

Dave is a rockstar (amazing vocalist, guitarist and writer). He is in the bands Paranoid Social Club and Rustic Overtones (both great, popular here in Maine, and well-respected in the northeast). Lindsay is a model we have worked with a few times and his girlfriend. Together they are super hot. This shoot was amazing and we have found another location that we absolutely love (we are location hunters!)… We shot a huge variety for them and they even had fun ideas for us too. :)

Welcome to the new fidelio photography site!

You may notice a few changes around here…our website is now our blog and our blog is now our website–basically we combined them! :) We absolutely loved our old website, but it was time for a change and we felt like we wanted our clients to get to know US and who we are, and we wanted to show the work that we love to make. So we both (yes, I am actually going to get Lyle to blog too!!!) are going to be blogging a lot more often, and posting articles, links, info and all of the shoots we do here, not just weddings/engagement, but we photograph fashion and portfolios for models, bands, portraits (families, maternity, etc) and we’ll even show some of our other landscape/commercial work. And our weddings website is still available at fidelioweddings.com

What we love to do is work with people, all kinds of people… every shoot is so unique and different, just like all of the different clients we encounter. And one of our strengths is connecting with our clients, making them comfortable enough around us for them to let us into their life for a little while and bringing out their uniqueness in photos… we want to make photos that you can look back on 10, 15, 20, 50+ years from now and still love: photos that evoke emotions and bring you back to the way you felt at that time in your life. The people who hire us love our style (composition, lighting, etc) and respect the art of photography. We want to show more of that with you here on our blog/website and for you to get to know us better. So bookmark the site or use the handy RSS feed link located at the top of this page so you can get updates when we post, because you will be seeing a lot of posts! And please feel free to give us comments, we love to hear from you and what you think of our photography!

Enjoy the new site :) There are a few things we’ll be working on changing over the weekend and a new portfolio will be launching early next week.
