A.J. & Kim’s Virginia wedding

In early May we traveled to the DC area where we shot A.J. and Kim’s beautiful spring wedding. A.J. is an old friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in about 10 years. When he and Kim got engaged I was excited that they both loved our work so much that we were the first vendor they booked for their wedding. And we were so flattered that they had to have us and brought us from Maine to DC for the wedding!

A.J. and Kim have a great story — they actually dated back in high school and re-united many years later when Kim found A.J. and got back in touch. They went out for lunch which lasted late into the evening. The sparks were re-kindled and knew they were supposed to find their way back to each other all those years later. And on May 8 they were married at Patowmack Farm in Lovettsville, Virginia (loved this venue so much!). They chose their wedding day because it was also A.J.’s beloved grandmother’s birthday and during the reception presented her with a special cupcake and everyone sang to her (she’s so cute, I loved shooting a few portraits of her). The whole day was beautiful and emotional for their family and friends (who were so kind to us) and we were happy to be there to document it AND it was our first wedding of 2010! Congrats A.J. and Kim!

From the moment we began planning our wedding, I knew Jess would be shooting it. I’ve always had a rule against hiring friends for professional work – and Jess has been a friend of mine since 1998 or so – but this was one rule I had to break. I had to have the best photographer I’ve ever known to shoot our wedding.

I happen to know some excellent photographers. In my work as a motorsports journalist (and aspiring photo guy in my own right), I’m well acquainted with some of the best in the business. My address book features names that have won all kinds of awards, been featured in more books and magazines than I can count. More than one of them approached me and offered to shoot my wedding – free of charge, I’d only pay for prints. I was honored and thrilled with the offer.

Yet, in the end, Kim and I decided to go with what I knew all along: There’s Jess & Lyle, then there’s everyone else. We’re very pleased with the results to say the least. And… it was just great having them with us for the rehearsal, the wedding, and the day-after shoot.

The photos of my grandma – who was celebrating her 88th birthday as we tied the knot – are priceless. Every single person who attended our wedding helped make it great, but grandma… it was her day as much as it was ours. For our anniversary to be on her birthday was by design, as a tribute to her.

And… To the person who posted above, yes, we’re VERY happy. Kim’s been the love of my life from the moment I laid eyes on her, back in high school. We love, cherish, and support each other – and never stop making each other laugh!

The photographs capture all of this, in a way only Jess and Lyle could.
